"Country-Americana-Pop-Rock." That's how Dave Wolfen-berger's record company, Fundamental, describes his new CD -apparently giving up trying to pigeonhole its own artist. And that's the joy of the third solo release from the veteran Cincinnati-based singer songwriter. All those genres fit on his "Portrait of Narcissus," his most accessible, catchy and soulful release to date. Wolfenberger, a multi-instrumentalist, has assembled a first- rate band for the session that delightfully wanders from country to pop with his lyrical themes also mixing moods from playful and humorous to the melancholy and metaphysical.

Wolfenberger is something of a well-kept local secret. He gained international recognition having toured as a member of the celebrated Creek Dippers, the improv roots backing group for county folk iconoclast Victoria Williams, who also contributes backing vocals on Wolfenberger's release.

Wolfenberger says part of that experience is reflected in his new release. "The Creek Dippers have a haphazard approach to music. We leave room for things to happen. You bring an ensemble and let them bring to the table what you have."

Wolfenberger plays a CD release party at Rohs Café 8:30 p.m. Saturday - Kim Taylor opening.
